Description

Siberian Crabapple (Malus baccata) is native to Siberia, northern China, and Mongolia. Niels E. Hansen introduced it to North America in the early twentieth century. Crosses with European apples contributed to many cold hardy cultivars; Dolgo is an early selection, while Ranetka refers to forms with some hybrid ancestry.

Fruit varies from one half to one inch depending on hybridization. The species is generally hardier than Antonovka and is valued as prairie rootstock and as a wildlife tree.
