Long Island Improved is the classic American Brussels sprout, developed from older Long Island market types and grown for sturdy stalks lined with tight green sprouts. This heirloom has the look of a miniature cabbage orchard, with sprouts forming from the bottom of the stalk upward.
Cool weather helps bring out the best flavor and firm texture, making it a strong choice for fall gardens. Harvest sprouts as they size up and cook them roasted, sautéed, or shaved fresh. It is a patient crop with a fine late-season reward.
