Description

Garrington is a selected strain of Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana) known for large fruit and vigorous growth. It originated near Garrington, Alberta, and was adopted by the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration as a seed parent for prairie shelterbelt plantings. Because it was maintained through seed, today’s plants represent a strain descended from those original plantings rather than a clone of one named plant.

Compared with typical wild chokecherry populations, Garrington seedlings tend to be larger and more productive, with substantial clusters of dark purple fruit. Open pollinated seedlings will vary while retaining the cold hardiness, productivity, and broad adaptability of the strain.
