Description
Garden Huckleberry (Solanum melanocerasum) is an African nightshade with clusters of fruit that ripen from green to deep purple black. It is related to tomatoes and eggplants rather than to true huckleberries in the genus Vaccinium.
The fully ripe fruit is normally cooked with sugar for jam, pies, and preserves. Plants form branching bushes about 2 to 3 ft tall and wide, with fruit maturing from late summer into early fall.
Fruit: Use only fully ripe fruit; unripe green fruit should not be eaten.
