Description
Freckles lettuce is a beautiful romaine-type heirloom with apple-green leaves splashed and speckled in burgundy-red. Often linked to the old Austrian variety Forellenschluss, or “trout back,” it brings a little painterly surprise to the salad row without losing the crisp texture romaine growers love.
The upright leaves are tender when young and develop good crunch as heads fill out. Harvest as baby leaves or let plants size up for colorful salad hearts. Freckles makes an ordinary bowl of greens feel gathered, not bought.
