Browne’s Mint hits all the marks for permaculture and biomimicry systems in the Southeastern US. Also known as Browne’s Savory, Creeping Charlie, and St. John’s Mint, this unassuming groundcover offers spearmint-flavored foliage, dainty flowers that attract pollinators, and happens to be a native wetland plant.
Browne’s Mint is commonly found growing wild along lake and freshwater edges where water is plentiful. Take the hint and plant your Browne’s Mint in sun or part shade, ideally in a very moist spot.
This aquatic perennial will grow no taller than about 6”. Instead it prefers to sprawl out in a low-growing, prostrate style. Sandy or loamy soil is acceptable. Zones 8a-10b.
