Description

Palmetta is a Russian hybrid apple from the Central Siberian Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Novosibirsk. Its name comes from palmette, reflecting its spreading habit and usefulness for espalier.

It is a cross of Belfleur Kitajka with Malus baccata. Belfleur Kitajka is associated with Russian breeder Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin and descends from Bellefleur and a hardy Kitajka type crabapple. This parentage contributes extreme cold hardiness, high disease resistance, and a distinctive form.

Palmetta reached Alaska as scionwood in the late 1990s and drew attention from cold region orchardists. The consistently productive tree bears medium rounded oblong light yellow fruit with raspberry blush, harvested from early or mid September into October. The fruit keeps well, and the tree is scab resistant.
