Description
Black Chokecherry (Prunus virginiana var. melanocarpa) grows naturally around the nursery with aspen, Saskatoon, and wild raspberry. This prairie form is compact, suckering, and forms dense stands.
The black fruit is slightly smaller than fruit from selections such as Garrington, but is often less astringent than eastern chokecherry and improves in flavour into fall. Fruit can remain into early winter for wildlife. These local plants tolerate sandy soil, drought, shade, and cold, and we are testing them as adaptable plum rootstock.
