Description
Wealthy was raised by Peter Gideon in Minnesota and introduced in 1868, becoming one of the first named apples to succeed reliably in the state’s cold climate. Gideon named the cultivar for his wife, Wealthy. Although once associated with crabapple ancestry, modern DNA work indicates Duchess of Oldenburg and Jonathan as its likely parents.
The fruit has crisp, juicy white flesh, sometimes stained red, with a lively sweet tart flavour and notes of honey and raspberry. Wealthy is useful for fresh eating, pies, sauce, and cider. Apples ripen from early August into mid September and keep for about 1 to 2 months refrigerated. The cultivar can be susceptible to scab, powdery mildew, fire blight, and especially cedar apple rust.
