Description
Siberian Crabapple (Malus baccata) is one of the cold hardiest apple species. Niels E. Hansen brought it from Siberia to Canada in the late nineteenth century, and Dolgo was among the seedlings he selected more than a century ago.
A twenty year old planting at a local homestead has remained healthy with little care. The full sized trees are useful as prairie rootstock, including as hardy frame trees for grafting, and as yard or wildlife trees. Seedling fruit varies in colour and size but is usually red or yellow and about one half to three quarters of an inch across.
