Description
Norland was bred by Dr. C. R. Ure for the Prairie Fruit Breeding Cooperative at Agriculture Canada’s Morden Research Station and introduced in 1979. A Rescue x Melba cross, it bears medium pale green apples covered in red stripes with off white, slightly coarse, juicy flesh.
The sweet early fruit ripens around early August and is useful fresh, in pies and sauce, and for cider. It is best soon after harvest and usually stores about one month, although slightly underripe fruit may keep for up to two months.
The naturally dwarfing tree begins bearing within three to four years and produces annually. It is somewhat susceptible to fire blight and, in wet weather, to scab.
