Moon and Stars watermelon is one of the great showpieces of the summer garden, with dark green rinds scattered in yellow speckles and larger golden “moons.” Introduced to American gardeners before 1900 and later nearly lost, this heirloom was brought back through seed-saving circles for its unforgettable look.
Inside, the fruits carry rosy red flesh with old-fashioned watermelon sweetness and plenty of juice for hot afternoons. The vines are vigorous and need room to roam, but the harvest feels like opening a storybook straight from the melon patch.
