Description
Latin name – Plectranthus spp.
Cuban Oregano is a versatile herb in the food forest. It has a strong scent and flavor, like oregano with a hint of citrus and menthol. While it is not related to “true” oregano, it can be used similarly although you’ll want to use less quantity as it is very potent. It is commonly used in stews, soups, marinades, and salads. The plant originates in South Africa, but it is used extensively in Cuban cuisine, hence its namesake. It has many medicinal uses and has been used to treat respiratory issues, arthritis, and digestive issues. The plant has large, thick, and fuzzy leaves that grow in a spreading habit. It is low maintenance and can be planted in full to partial sun, in well draining soil.
