Description
Latin name – Sophora tomentosa
Necklace Pod is a pollinator friendly medium size shrub that can reach 6-10ft tall and 4-8ft wide, but is often maintained at a much smaller size. It is great for coastal environments as it has high salt and drought tolerance – it occurs naturally in Florida in coastal areas, hammocks, and dunes. It produces yellow flowers throughout the year that cascade down a long draping spike. Once the flowers fade, the bead like fruit begins to form, hence the name “Necklace Pod”. It provides food and cover for a variety of wildlife. Also, since it is a member of the pea family, it is a great nitrogen fixer!
