Description
Latin name – Psychotria nervosa
Native Wild Coffee has pretty glossy green leaves that are used as a hedge or for privacy in shaded areas. It also make a great plant in a pollinator garden as the flowers attract bees and butterflies – especially Atalas and Swallowtails. Pair with a patch of Coontie plants to attract an endangered Atala butterfly population in your food forest! The red berries look similar to coffee beans and are a favorite food of native birds and other wildlife. They can also be roasted and brewed like coffee, although they don’t have any caffeine. This lesser known shrub deserves a spot in every Florida landscape.
