Description

Latin name – Hibiscus acetosella

A stunning choice for South Florida gardens, Cranberry Hibiscus thrives in our warm, tropical climate. Known for its vibrant burgundy foliage and fall blooms, this hardy perennial adds color and texture to any landscape. The leaves are edible and have a tart, cranberry-like flavor, perfect for making herbal teas, adding to salads, or even incorporating into cooked dishes like soups or stir-fries.  We love to just snack on the fresh leaves while walking through the garden!  Not only does this plant offer striking beauty and culinary potential, but it grows effortlessly in our heat and humidity, requiring minimal care once established.  Just make sure to plant in full sun and well-drained soil, and it’ll take off!  You can expect it to become a 6 to 8 foot tall bush if left unpruned, with tons of flowers appearing during the shortening fall days.  Cranberry Hibiscus is an excellent addition to food forests and gardens in South Florida, giving a pop of color and abundant, tasty “greens” in one easy-to-grow package.

Bonus tip: Try finely chopping Cranberry Hibiscus leaves and adding to guacamole as a replacement for lime, or use the leaves to add a zingy touch of flavor to fresh dishes like fish or shrimp tacos.
