Description

Appalachian sedge is the one to use where you want a clump rather than a carpet. Carex appalachica stays put instead of running, forming a fine-textured fountain 12 to 18 inches tall and wide, which makes it a better choice than the spreading sedges for edging a path, planting in drifts with something else between, or filling a woodland bed you want to stay legible. Hardy from Zone 3 through Zone 8 in part shade to full shade.

The leaves are threadlike, finer than most sedges, and arch outward into a soft mound that catches light well. It looks intentional in a way a spreading groundcover does not.

Slender green flower spikes appear in late spring and are subtle enough that most people never notice them.

Appalachian sedge grows naturally on dry wooded slopes, so it handles dry shade, root competition from mature trees, and thin rocky soil. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart for a continuous edge, further apart if you want individual clumps to read. Deer leave it alone.
